According to Retail Monitor data, November retail sales, excluding automobiles and gasoline, exhibited a 4.24% growth compared to November 2022. Core retail sales, which exclude restaurants, also showed a robust growth of 4.17% during the same period. Both metrics demonstrated higher year-over-year growth than observed in October.

NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said, "November Retail Monitor data shows that consumers are embracing the holiday season and promotions being offered by retailers." He added that value-conscious shoppers are actively seeking deals as they purchase gifts for family and friends.
  • The NRF had predicted a 3%-4% year-over-year growth in total holiday spending between November and December, and the current data aligns with this forecast.

Health and personal care sales grew by 9.15%, sporting goods, hobby items, music, and books by 8.25%, and apparel and accessories by 5.81%, according to Retail Monitor. However, consumer electronics sales faced challenges, growing by just 0.1% year over year in November.

Dipanjan Chatterjee, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester, notes that despite consumers reporting low confidence and high anxiety about the economy, other factors such as low unemployment, pandemic-era savings, and high house values contribute to financial security, stimulating spending. Retailers are adjusting strategies by dialing back on sitewide sales and free shipping, instead offering volume-based discounts to encourage greater spending in exchange for deals.

The holiday sales landscape has unmistakably been shaped by the dominance of online shopping. The latest data reveals a substantial surge in online holiday sales, with growth rates surpassing those of traditional retail categories. Consumers, driven by convenience and enticing promotions, have enthusiastically embraced the digital marketplace, as evidenced by the remarkable  year-over-year increase in online sales reported by The NRF's Retail Monitor.
This shift towards online shopping is further emphasized by the 10.6% growth reported by the U.S. Census Bureau, outpacing total retail sales. Cyber Monday, with its record-breaking  in online spending, exemplifies the heightened significance of digital platforms during the holiday season.
While other retail categories experienced growth, none matched the momentum generated by online sales. As we navigate the remainder of the holiday season, it is evident that online shopping has not only asserted its dominance but has become the driving force shaping the contemporary holiday retail landscape.
