Temu welcomes European sellers

In March, Temu, a rapidly expanding ecommerce giant from China, is set to launch its marketplace for sellers in the United States, with plans to subsequently include European sellers. Despite these intentions, the actual uptake of online sellers onto the Chinese platform remains uncertain.

Temu welcomes European sellers

Temu, an international online marketplace, operates under the umbrella of the Chinese tech behemoth PDD Holdings. Having initiated its European venture last year, Temu established its presence in the region following the opening of an office in Ireland. The marketplace primarily operates on the dropshipping model, facilitating direct shipment of products from manufacturers to consumers.

Expanding Influence in Europe
The introduction of the Chinese app has led to a decrease in daily mobile shoppers for other ecommerce giants like Amazon and eBay. In November of last year, Temu further solidified its presence in Europe by bolstering its delivery network through strategic partnerships with logistics firms.

Opening Up to Local Sellers After March 15th

Presently, all sellers on the platform hail from China. However, Temu recently announced its plan to diversify its seller base by allowing sellers from the United States to join the platform beginning March 15th, followed by the inclusion of European sellers. These local sellers will be required to establish logistics operations from their domestic warehouses, enabling quicker delivery of goods to customers. Furthermore, Temu will adopt a hands-off approach to pricing and marketing, mirroring the strategies employed by industry giants such as Amazon and eBay.

AliExpress's Failed Attempt to Attract European Sellers
While sellers stand to benefit from accessing Temu's vast customer base, the willingness of brands to embrace the platform remains uncertain. Past endeavors by platforms like Wish and AliExpress to diversify their seller base have yielded limited success in attracting a substantial number of domestic sellers.

The impending launch of Temu's marketplace in the United States and Europe marks a significant development in the global ecommerce landscape. However, the platform's success in enticing sellers from these regions and establishing itself as a formidable competitor to established players remains to be seen.
